Welcome to Balean’s “Meet Our Partners” Series!
Dear friends,
We’re excited to bring you a new round of Project Highlights! a series showcasing the incredible organizations driving real ocean impact through Balean.
From frontline climate science to circular innovation and community-powered conservation, these new partners show how diverse, meaningful, and inspiring ocean action can be.
Let 's Meet Them!
Oceanites (UK 🇬🇧 + Antarctica ❄️)
Indicators of Change
Frontline Climate Science Powered by People

Started by Ron Naveen, meet Oceanites, the organization that has spent 30 years counting more than 3.5 million penguins to understand how climate change is reshaping Antarctica.
Now they need our help to purchase two new drones: To allow penguin counting to be safer, faster, and disturbance-free.

Ghost Gear for Impact
Turning Ghost Gear into Circular Impact
See the post on LinkedIn
Meet Nets for Net Zero, transforming one of the ocean’s biggest threats, abandoned fishing gear, into opportunity.
Founded by Nina Lantinga, the project recovers ghost nets, empowers women entrepreneurs in Kerala, and upcycles ocean plastic into new products.
This is climate action, social impact, and circular innovation in one.
Pacific Seaweed Industry Association (Pacific Region)
Connected Seaweed Voices
Connecting people and making sure no voice is left behind
See the post on LinkedIn
Seaweed has supported coastal communities for centuries… yet its stories remain invisible.
Driven by Phoebe Lewis and Mark Smith, Connected Seaweed Voices is changing that by creating a digital space where harvesters, Indigenous leaders, researchers, and seaweed workers can be seen, heard, and connected.

The Andromede Expedition
Collecting whale data to protect marine life
See the post on LinkedIn
How do whales behave along Nova Scotia’s coast? They are going to research that:
A team of friends, sailors, and marine biologists is preparing a new expedition aboard their wind-powered sailboat Andromede to collect essential baseline data on marine mammals; done ethically and sustainably.

Introducing OCEAN PULSE: Monitoring the Heartbeat of the Ocean
See the post on LinkedIn
Balean isn’t just supporting projects, we’re putting our hands in the (digital) water as well and building our own ocean impact solutions.
Ocean PULSE is an Ocean Health Monitor that combines satellite data, AI, science, and community observations to reveal how well Marine Protected Areas are truly being protected.
With over 700 “paper parks” worldwide, transparency is urgently needed —> and Ocean PULSE is here to change that.
In collaboration with the Amsterdam University of Applied science and Data analyst Collen Kriel
